Quick answers to the questions UK and Irish travellers ask most. For the detail, see our Plan Your Trip guides.

Do I need a visa to visit Turkey from the UK?

No. British citizens can visit for tourism or business for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. Other types of British passport, such as BN(O), do need one.

Do Irish citizens need a visa for Turkey?

No. Irish citizens can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. You need a full Irish passport — the passport card isn’t accepted.

How long does my passport need to be valid?

UK passports need at least 150 days left after the date you arrive, plus a blank page. Irish passports also need at least 150 days left after the date you arrive.

Is Turkey the same as Türkiye?

Yes. Türkiye is the country’s name in Turkish, and the government asked the UN to use it internationally in 2022. You’ll see both names used.

Will my GHIC or EHIC work in Turkey?

No. Turkey isn’t in the EU, so neither card is valid. Take out travel insurance with medical cover before you go.

Is Turkey safe for tourists?

Millions of British and Irish visitors have trouble-free trips every year. Avoid the area within 10 km of the Syrian border, follow local laws, and check the latest UK or Irish government advice before you travel. See our Safety & Local Laws page.

What currency should I take?

The Turkish lira. Use a card with no foreign transaction fees, carry some lira for small purchases, and always choose to pay in lira when a machine asks.

What plug sockets does Turkey use?

Two-pin European plugs (types C and F) at 230 volts — bring a UK-to-European adaptor.

What’s the time difference?

Turkey is on UTC+3 all year: 3 hours ahead of the UK and Ireland in winter and 2 hours ahead in summer.

Can I drink the tap water?

Most visitors stick to bottled water, which is cheap and sold everywhere.

Can I use my mobile phone?

Yes, but roaming charges from the UK and Ireland to Turkey can be high, because Turkey isn’t covered by EU-style roaming deals. Check your network’s Turkey add-on, or buy a local or travel eSIM — though some eSIM services are restricted in Turkey, so check before you buy.

How long is the flight?

Around 3½ to 4½ hours direct from London, Manchester, Glasgow or Dublin.

Do I need to tip?

About 10% in restaurants if service isn’t included, small change in cafés, and round up in taxis.

What should I wear?

Beachwear is fine at the beach and pool. In towns and especially in mosques, cover your shoulders and knees; women also cover their hair inside mosques.

Can I drink alcohol in Turkey?

Yes. Alcohol is sold in licensed restaurants, bars, hotels and shops. Avoid unbranded or unusually cheap spirits: fake alcohol containing methanol has killed people in Turkey.

Can I do a day trip to a Greek island?

Yes — ferries run from Bodrum, Marmaris, Kuşadası and other ports to islands such as Kos, Rhodes and Samos. Take your passport and allow extra time for the EU’s Entry/Exit border checks.
